Though at first glance it may seem neither very old nor very permanent, we've been told that the Cossack started - as the Cossack - in 1835. It has carrried many other names since.
Sheffpub reader Nick Lister informed us:
"The Cossack is indeed an old pub. It was originally a 2 storey building but disaster struck on December 10th 1940. Rawson's brewery which stood on the Hallam university site was hit by a huge bomb and destroyed. The Cossack which had been a Rawson's house was badly damaged, and because no building materials were available was made into a bungalow pub with a temporary roof. It was one of 3 such pubs in Sheffield. The others being the Black Swan and the Montgomery Tavern. It is however the only one remaining.
"After Rawson's was destroyed the pubs were taken over by Duncan Gilmour who were in turn taken over by Tetley."
